SHOT STUDIES

SHOT STUDIES

Two days ago, my class was given an assignment to film five shots to practice the different types of shots. Me and two of my classmates grouped together to film and this is what I got!

SHOT 1: COWBOY SHOT

In this video, I filmed a cowboy shot of Sarah in which she reaches behind her to use her phone. The camera remains at a neutral, eye level angle with her to encourage normalcy where it might not be. The purpose of this shot type here is to create suspense by placing the camera directly where she would reach behind her for an unknown object while the audience waits in anticipation.

SHOT 2: POV SHOT

I chose to film a point of view (POV) shot for this clip, which triples as a high angle and an extreme close-up due to the proximity of Nicole's dramatically shaking hands after it looks like she has just woken up from a traumatic event. This gives the audience an inside look into what is happening as they see it directly from the eyes of the character.

SHOT 3: HIGH ANGLE SHOT

Another high angle, but this time it captures almost the full body of Sarah, who cowers in fear from something looming evilly above her. I am not exactly sure which type of shot to call this seeing as she is crouching, which hides some parts of her body, but if she were standing it would likely be a wide shot. The angle used captures her vulnerability, and shows how she is belittled by this fear-inspiring, unknown body.

SHOT 4: ESTABLISHING SHOT

This clip is my personal favorite, the rain noises in the background really add to the effect. I feel as though this would make a great establishing shot for a scene, being far away from all this action and energy really draws you into what is happening, like its being set at your feet. This two shot is filmed from a very low angle, and semi-far away making it right on the cusp of being a wide shot versus an extreme wide shot. From this, the audience learns that these characters, as well as the loud shouting match they are having will be very important to the movie.

SHOT 5: MID SHOT

For this last video, I filmed Nicole with a mid-shot as she yells at off screen characters. This allows for the audience to track her emotional expression as she attempts to keep order, as well as introduce the dialogue scene that will likely come as those off screen characters utter a response.

-------------

As unprofessional as these clips are, it was still a lot of fun to come up with and execute ideas. Everyone has to start somewhere. Filming these clips was even giving us inspiration for possible project ideas we may use in the movie clip we make at the end of the year.

We have a quiz on these shot types coming up on Friday and I'm kind of nervous. Wish me luck! This practice did help with putting videos to the words we got when we were learning the shot types though.

That's all for now, see you next time!

  3. I really like your low angle/wide shot scene since it creates a sense of drama especially with the added dialogue. Also, you have a really nice theme by the way!
